The Newfoundland and Labrador Liquor Corp. is still waiting to find out when the jig is up.

With the St. John’s Convention Centre due to expand, the Jighouse — the corporation’s downtown liquor store, which emphasizes local products and promotes its “Screech-In” experience on Gower Street next to the convention centre — will have to either move or close.

But the NLC doesn’t know where or when yet — or even what will be done when the expansion begins.

Greg Gill, the corporation’s director of communications, said the NLC will lookfor “a little clarity” over the next few weeks from convention centre management about their expansion plans and timelines.

“It’s still quite possible that we’ll shut down that location and look to do something else in St. John’s,” he said.

“The other option that has been informally discussed is the potential to take advantage of some retail space within the confines of the new convention centre expansion plans, but there’s been nothing confirmed to date.”

Right now, the corporation is considering all its options, said Gill. And events the corporation holds in the convention centre — such as Winefest, currently scheduled for mid-October — have to be figured out.

“Depending on when they start, and what area they start to blow out, that may have an impact on some of our special events, like Winefest,” he said.

In the meantime, it’s business as usual, with Screech-In ceremonies continuing to be scheduled.

Work could begin on the $43.2-million expansion as early as this fall.

Why are they doing Screech-ins? Why is a Government owned monopoly competing with private businesses? The Government should be supporting businesses, they should not be in business, liquor or otherwise, . We no more need a Government alcohol monopoly than we need a Government cola monopoly. Free enterprise works most places in world, it will work here in Newfoundland Labrador.

Standing O. It is a patronizing, criminal governemnt that treats it's taxpayers with such contempt, and then turns around and completely incinerates this "extra" income anyway. Shame on them, and shame on us for putting up with it without a peep. But hey, go nuts with your 'Occupy' farce...that is soooo much more useful.
