Target to open St. John’s location in winter 2013

Target says its first Newfoundland location will open next winter. The U.S. retailer announced on Friday the Cabot Square Zellers — on Stavanger Drive in St. John’s, one of three Zellers locations in Newfoundland acquired by Target last year and one of about 125 locations Target plans to open in Canada next year — will reopen as a Target in the winter of 2013.

A news release from the company said about $10 million to $11 million will be spent to remodel each store and the Stavanger Drive location will employ 150-200 people, hiring of which will begin in 2013.

The news release didn’t say whether current Zellers staff would be considered first when hiring is done for the new Target.

Target didn’t release the timetable for another Zellers lease — in Corner Brook — that it plans to convert to a Target. A third Zellers lease acquired by Target, on Topsail Road in St. John’s, has been flipped to Wal-Mart.

Target’s Canadian spokeswoman did not return a request for comment.

I welcome the new competition in the marketplace. I have no problem with supporting an American company, and have no problem if Targets forces other local businesses out of business. All I want is lower prices, so I look forward to shopping at Target. My bottom line is most important to me, and if Target or any other American company (or Canadian company) can help me keep more of my money, then I am happy to give them my business. I will NOT spend an extra penny to support local businesses.,....my only duty is to provide the most for my family and my loved ones

These target stores will be much like the Dominion type with food and general merchandise available, but of higher quality and brand names.

Target was here in the past.....shut their doors and ran. That wasn't that long ago. A friend of mine was manager of a store and went to work one day and the doors were locked. Don't expect too much here.

Neil, that "Target" is Piper's Equal. Target (AKA RedDOT Store) is nothing like the el cheapo target Newfies flocked to in droves years ago.

What a ignorant statement to make Neil. You don't even know what company your talking about. The Traget you are referring is a chain of dollar stores like BiWay or Bargin Harold's . The Target opening up in previous locations is an American retailing company, It is the second-largest discount retailer in the United States, behind Walmart with 1800 locations and 70 Billion in yearly sales. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Target_Corporation

Zellers and HBC has been owned by a US firm since 2008. Target is known for it higher quality goods and clothes, much better than what you will find at WalMart, at a affordable price. I will be happy to see them set up shop. When was the last time anyone shopped at Zellers. Dark dirty messy unkept stores.
