Los Angeles company to distribute show

The cast of “Republic of Doyle” will get air time in the U.S. now that the show will be distributed by Trifecta Entertainment of Los Angeles. — Submitted photo

With “Republic of Doyle” about to start filming its fifth season, the show will soon start appearing on American television screens.

Trifecta Entertainment of Los Angeles has made a deal to distribute the show in the United States, and the show’s star says the deal will help the provincial government recoup its investment.

“We’re super excited about it, and this is really, really big news,” Allan Hawco, producer and actor who plays the show’s Jake Doyle, told The Telegram on Tuesday. “A sale in the U.S. is huge because it means that when the show goes into syndication — the United States is our biggest market and we hadn’t sold there yet. It’s only happened right now, essentially, because we got ordered for Season 5; that brings us into syndication numbers — that means the show will be playing all across the United States, likely for years, an unquantifiable amount of years, which is very exciting.”

Broadening the audience for the show is how its funding partners — including the Newfoundland and Labrador government and CBC — make their money back, and profit, said Hawco.

“But eventually, if the show does half decent in years to come, the return on the investment on the province, from the CBC, all the shareholders get a portion of any profits that will eventually come.”

Despite the size of the U.S. market, Hawco said he was happy making a show just for Canadian audiences.

“When we started designing the show, I stayed away from trying to partner with an American network, because I didn’t want to bastardize or water down the Newfoundland or Canadian content. I wanted to make this show real and truthful to the place, obviously while spinning it with the mystery, detective elements,” he said.

“I didn’t want Jake carrying a gun, or etc. etc. etc. I didn’t want American influence to be dictating the creative.”

Work on the show’s fifth season — extended to 16 episodes, more than the 13 of the last few seasons — began late last fall, with shooting to start in May. Season 4 wraps up Sunday night with two new episodes back to back.

Republic of Doyle has been airing in the USA since September 2013. In many local TV markets it airs very late night. Please check your local listings and call the TV station to upgrade the show to a better time period.

Thanks for remaining true to your'e Newfoundland and Canadian roots. With so much American content on TV, it's great to see a show that relies on it's great writing rather than gratuitous violence. Great cast of characters!

Can you get the BBC to buy it and show it on mainstream television in the U.K. I'm sure it would be a big hit over here. Due South was huge and well liked.

Great program that my family enjoys each week. The Sunday slot, however, has not been a good choice for ROD. Many episodes were pre-empted on Sundays due to the Grammies, Oscars, Super Bowl, Canadian Television Awards....among others. Hence, a big disruption in the flow of the program. I hope they go back to Wednesdays for next season.

Good post, but in all seriousness, some people might be okay with other provinces getting cheap energy at the expense of Newfoundland taxpayers. I am one of those people because I have business interests in Nova Scotia and I stand to get cheaper energy at the expense of Newfoundland. As a taxpayer and voter, I support this because it benefits me. I understand why many would oppose this, but those who oppose must do something about. I will not spend my time doing anything about it because even though I know it is wrong, it is still in my best interests.

Great, maybe now they won't need the Provincial government to continually provide major financial input. Never did understand how that came about.

The show makes NL look great and brings a lot of tourism to the province. It's like advertising :)

Loved this show from the beginning! Sense of humour is wonderful! Using the beautiful Province almost like a character on the show works so well! Placing it in Ottawa for a few sessions (last show of the season hints at this) would be very interesting. I love all the weird Canadian characters too - Gordon Pinsent, Paul Gross, the guy from Quincy and the one from Murdoch Mysteries - and others whose names I can't recall. Have loved them all forever - wonderful actors! Allan Hawco is amazing!

this is great but i think in order to promote our provinence for tourism the writers and producers should keep things more local ,like more local actors . and promote local towns and bussinses, just one example a couble shows back des was imatating a utility worker from our local electrical provider ( atlantic electrical,) i think we all pay our bills to NL POWER. keep story lines about places here in newfoundland ,just as was the first few seasons .
