Tyler Power

Globe-trotting Memorial University business student Tyler Power is heading back to Indonesia.

Power, 21, of Tors Cove has been invited to the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) summit in Bali in October, a business forum on sustainable growth and development, attended by business and government leaders.

World leaders such as Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin are expected to attend, as are representatives from corporations like GE, Microsoft and FedEx.

“I’m looking forward to it,” said Power, who has been a member of a Junior Team Canada trade delegation to, among other trips, Malaysia and India to make contacts and explore opportunities for trip sponsors.

“This one is straight up my alley as a CEO, investment-type summit.”

Power will attend meetings with the CEO, and heads of state, in the aims of attracting investors to Newfoundland.

“The energy sector, I’m sure, is going to be a big target for me,” said Power, who is working in a job placement with Husky in procurement.

“It’s going to be nice — I’ll have some more experience to talk to those guys about the potential here in offshore Newfoundland. It’s not just our offshore resources, it’s also our resources for exploration in Labrador.

Recognized for Arctic business potential

“We were just recognized as being probably the best place to do business for those interested in Arctic exploration, as well as our aquaculture industry, so there’s a lot to talk about, and a lot of people to get in touch with.”

Power, who just finished his fourth year of business studies at MUN, figures he’ll need to raise about $5,500 for the trip from sponsors, on whose behalf he’ll meet with business representatives in Bali.

He’s not worried about securing the funds. “It’s all about making partnerships that are mutually beneficial,” he said.

“Each party gets a benefit, and you’re not just seeking money for the sake of going on the trip. It’s getting things done.”
