Marine Atlantic has renewed its lease on the MV Atlantic Vision for one year.
Darrell Mercer, spokesman for the ferry service corporation, confirmed Friday that the lease agreed to this month with Estonian company Tallink takes effect for a one-year period in November.
“This lease agreement, right now, brings us up to next fall,” said Mercer. “But next August we’ll be in another position to decide if we want to continue to lease again. We’re working with the Government of Canada right now over the next 12 months to finalize our fleet strategy, so we’ll be submitting that to the Government of Canada for review next year.”
The original five-year lease included options to renew for a year at a time if necessary, said Mercer.
“Further extensions to the Atlantic Vision’s lease agreement will be considered as part of our fleet strategy. We’ve been asked as well to evaluate other potential options that might be available.”
Mercer said Marine Atlantic, under its contract with Tallink, could not release the terms of the one-year lease. The company considers it proprietary information.
