St. John’s-based clothing retailer Eclipse is venturing online with the launch this week of its first shopping website.

Eclipse spokeswoman Candice Dupuis said the site,, is an exciting step for the company. The site has been in the works since early 2012.

“We launched it officially on Monday, the website went live,” she said. “We had a day of ‘soft launch,’ we called it, and once everything seemed to be running smoothly, we started promoting it on email and social media, and we’ve been having orders come in and so far everything’s been running pretty smoothly.”

Selling clothing online has its challenges, acknowledges Dupuis, given the way many shoppers like to try clothes on before they buy, but she’s confident the website addresses those concerns.

“The trick to getting around that is you need to have really strong content on your website,” she said. “Excellent photography, you need to show as many angles of the item as you can.”

The website also has a how-to size measuring guide, she said.

“It has directions to take your measurements and then a conversion chart so you can see what size you’d be,” she said. “It’s fairly accurate. We tested it on a lot of people to make sure that if they thought they’re a size medium and that’s what they ordered, it should fit them.”

Eclipse was founded nearly four decades ago with its first store in Twillingate in 1974 and today has 68 locations across Canada, employing more than 500 people.
