Chance to put questions to Nalcor Energy staff

Nalcor Energy is hosting an information session tonight on a shoreline “electrode” to be built in Conception Bay South as part of the ongoing Lower Churchill hydroelectric project.

Construction on the Muskrat Falls project started this year and is expected to continue over the next five years.

The C.B.S. electrode — one of two to be built as part of the project, the other being in L’Anse au Diable in southern Labrador — is expected to be started in 2015 and take about a year to finish.

It is a sizable piece of power infrastructure, including construction of a rock berm out into the ocean, creating a rectangle out from the shoreline.

“The berm will create a saltwater pond, with the berm forming three sides of the rectangle and the shore forming the fourth side,” reads a description included in an informational pamphlet created by Nalcor Energy.

Power infrastructure onshore will connect the site to Soldiers Pond, where the Labrador-Island Transmission Link will bring Muskrat Falls power to Newfoundland’s Avalon Peninsula.

The “electrode” at Dowden’s Point is a grounding system, using ocean as a return path, to send electricity in a case where the system needs repair or maintenance.

Nalcor has said the Dowden’s Point site will be secured with perimeter fencing and clear signage. Extensive documentation, available through the Crown corporation and the provincial Department of Environment and Conservation, details the site’s selection and proposed use.

Questions on the C.B.S. electrode project are welcome at the information session. It is scheduled for 6-8:30 p.m. at St. Peter’s Parish Hall in Upper Gullies.
