Internet services in Conception Bay North are about to take a giant leap forward, with Bell Aliant announcing it will bring its so-called “fibre-to-the-home” technology to business owners and homeowners by year’s end.

It’s all part of a $12-million investment to extend fibre optic technology to five more municipalities — Bay Roberts, Carbonear, Clarenville, Torbay and Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s.

The project will make FibreOP available to an additional 21,000 homes and businesses, bolstering the total number to about 125,000 throughout the province.

“This expansion is part of our plan to offer the power of FibreOP to as many customers as possible,” Andre LeBlanc, a vice-president at Bell Aliant, stated recently in a news release.

It was also welcome news to Churence Rogers, president of Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador.

“Having access to the best broadband technology available helps our communities and our citizens succeed. It has been a boost to communities who have it and we are delighted to see it extended,” said Rogers.

Leblanc said they are rolling out the products and services that they’ve used throughout St. John’s, Corner Brook and Gander.

“It is the most advanced technology in the world and we are bringing it right into these communities,” said Leblanc, adding, “For us, it’s like building a big super highway into the town and giving the residents and businesses the opportunity to be on the world’s fastest network.”

As Internet use continues to evolve, more people are using several devices at the same time. According to Leblanc, FibreOP can easily handle multiple connected devices, large data files and streaming video with Internet download speeds of up to 250 Mbps, and upload speeds as high as 30 Mbps.

“It’s real stuff that people are using today; it’s not futuristic stuff. It’s using YouTube faster, Netflix faster, and using Facebook faster,” he said.
