Liberal Jim Bennett questions government’s commitment to review
The provincial government’s decision to install an indefinite-term moratorium on onshore oil and gas projects using hydraulic fracturing is not sitting well with Liberal MHA Jim Bennett.
“I think the moratorium is really a convenient fiction for the government to do nothing,” he told The Telegram Tuesday.
The MHA for St. Barbe presented a petition in the House of Assembly the day before, saying fracking “could be an accepted and ef-fective method of petroleum discovery and exploration, and is compatible with the protection of the natural environment and water sources when executed within the context of a comprehensive regulatory framework.”
He said the development of an oil industry in Western Newfoundland could help what he described as an economically challenged area.
Bennett wants detailed regulations for fracking, with both a go or no-go decision still on the table.
