Seadrill rig will be used in 18-month drill plan

The Newfoundland and Labrador offshore will see the semi-submersible drilling rig West Hercules in operation later this year.

The West Hercules  offshore drilling rig.

Statoil has settled on the rig for use in completing a planned multi-well drilling campaign.

The drilling is expected to extend over the course of 18 months.

The work will be focused in the Flemish Pass Basin, about 500 kilometres northeast of St. John’s. Statoil has three oil finds in the basin —  at the Bay du Nord, Harpoon and Mizzen sites.

In 2013, Bay du Nord was revealed as the company’s biggest oil discovery outside Norway and the world’s largest conventional oil discovery of the year by volume, with an initial estimate of 300 million to 600 million barrels recoverable.

The West Hercules is owned by Seadrill, is a sister rig to the West Aquarius and has accommodations for 180 people.
