Ken Marshall named new chair of the board

The chairman of the board of directors of Nalcor Energy has left the Crown corporation.
Businessman Terrance (Terry) Styles, who was appointed to Nalcor’s board in 2012, has been replaced by board member Ken Marshall, The Telegram has learned.

According to four Orders in Council from the provincial cabinet, now available online, Marshall has been placed into the positions of acting chair of Nalcor Energy, acting chair of the board of directors of Nalcor subsidiary Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro, acting chair of the Churchill Falls (Labrador) Corp. Ltd. and chair of Nalcor’s Lower Churchill Development Corp.

Styles runs a beer distribution company, Appalachia Distributing, in Stephenville and previously served as chair of the board of governors for the College of the North Atlantic.

Styles took over from outgoing board member Cathy Bennett, CEO of Bennett Group of Companies.

His appointment was made along with three others at the time: Grand Falls-Windsor Mayor Al Hawkins, then-mayor Leo Abbass of Happy Valley-Goose Bay and Erin Breen, a lawyer with Simmonds+Partners Defence.

A spokeswoman for Nalcor Energy confirmed Styles’ exit, saying no specific reason was given for his departure.

The Telegram has been unable to connect with Styles or the remaining Nalcor board members as of deadline Friday.

The Orders in Council, by which the change was discovered by the paper, are dated Friday, March 14 — two days after Premier Tom Marshall signalled the province was beefing up monitoring of the multibillion-dollar Muskrat Falls hydroelectric project and only a day after details of that planned oversight was announced.

The orders were posted online the day after the provincial budget came down, including a $553-million equity injection by the province into Nalcor, for both the Crown corporation’s stake in ongoing offshore oil developments and the Lower Churchill Project.

If you wanted to design a more inept "lap dog " rubber stamp BOD, you simply couldn't. For the coat of a few plates of 'free' sandwiches in front of this bunch, they delivered whatever agenda they wanted at the meetings. "Yes, fine, it's all fine....where are those nice donuts with the cream filling!?" NALCOR.......what a great idea that is in a place like this !!!

Is this a case of personal conflict of interest. Or sweeping house from Premier Dunderdale's appointees? Telegram journos - saddle up!
