The Telegram has a new publisher: experienced media manager Gordon Brewerton.
Born in Montreal, his lengthy career in media has taken him across much of the country. Beginning as a graphic artist in 1980, Brewerton has worked in various capacities of the business — reporter, advertising sales, publisher and senior executive — receiving various national newspaper awards along the way.

He’s served as a group publisher with TC Media, Sun Media and Tor-star/Metroland.

Brewerton has also run his own media consulting firm.

Although born in Quebec, he said he has always felt like Atlantic Canada was his true home. He said he was in Newfoundland for a newspaper convention a few years ago and fell in love with the place. So, when given an opportunity to work in the province, he could not refuse.

“Out of the blue I got a call from a former colleague who said, ‘There’s an opportunity in Newfoundland. Why don’t you think about it?’ And I said, ‘I don’t need to think about it. I’m there.’ And here I am,” Brewerton said.

He has purchased a home in St. John’s and looks forward to becoming part of the community.

The publisher’s position oversees the entire paper, setting the direction and making major decisions about its future.

Brewerton believes the key to the newspaper remaining successful is ensuring it’s relevant to readers.

“We need to be more in touch with what people want,” he said. “There’s so much competition for their time right now that we need to supply them with information and dig up stories that will mean something to them.”

Brewerton also plans on making changes to the look and design of The Telegram, both in print and online. However, with ever-changing technologies, nothing is set in stone.

“There are all kinds of positive changes coming up,” he said. “At the pace at which technology is evolving, there really are no limits. We don’t know what we’ll be able to do two years from now, and that’s very exciting.”

Along with being the publisher of The Telegram, Brewerton is also the new director of operations for TC Media’s 12 other publications across Newfoundland and Labrador. His goal for the time being is to get to know the people he will be working with. He plans to travel across the province soon to meet the staff at all other operations.

"skip the print news" is a very myopic suggestion.

He got a big job on his hands. The trend is people are getting away from the "print" news and switching to on-line to access to news outlets. He should scrap the print news and switch entirely to on-line access. I suggest that he look at the BBC website for ideas on how to design and present news.
