The Governments of Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador today announced $3 million in renovation and retrofit work on 381 Newfoundland Labrador Housing units, as well as co-operative and non-profit housing properties, in the central region of the province.
The funding was made available through Canada's Economic Action Plan, which is a federal plan to stimulate the economy and create jobs during the global recession.
According to a news release, overall, the Economic Action Plan includes $2 billion for new and existing social housing, plus up to $2 billion in loans to municipalities for housing-related infrastructure. The federal and provincial governments are contributing equally to this overall investment of $58 million under the amended Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Affordable Housing Program Agreement.
The Government of Canada wants to improve the quality of existing social housing for low-income seniors, single-parent families, recent immigrants and Aboriginal households.
The funding is being used for items such as the replacement of roofing, siding, windows and doors, and a complete retrofit of the interiors, which can include the replacement of flooring, drywall, doors, kitchen and bathroom cupboards, flooring, counters and fixtures such as tubs, sinks and showers. The investment will significantly extend the life of these structures for future use.

Its great to be a lower income family, an immigrant or an Aboriginal. I am the parent of an 18 year old lady. I am the only one working in the house. if I require assistance for help i have to tell the last time i went to the bathroom and how much I paid for the tissue. Then I may be able to aquire help. That will be in the form of a grant or a loan. Its tough when you have a child here and can't utilize your home and people not working or (in some cases)choose not to work and are living better that you.my latest example is my child at 15 needed a power chair so we needed aa 3 foot door and a landing so it cost 1300 under a grant. Because of this if I needed to say do some work to so she could do a simple thing like get a drink of water I have to wait 5 years to recieve help. This may not seem much to people and some may say well f i wants to remodel my home I have to pay for it I say yes but this is not a renovation its a nessessity. The government has grants and loans available to people for help. And I don't care who you are or what your stature are in life if you can get a grant or lower rates for renovaions you would its not all cut and dry but my point is Yes people need help but there is a line when hard working people wound be better of on any type os social assistance
