Police in the metro area are investigating what remains of a Paradise house after a fire that destroyed the home early this morning.
Crews from the CBS and St. John's Regional Fire Departments responded to the fire around 3:30 this morning. The building was completely engulfed in flames when emergency workers arrived at the scene.
Two people who were inside the house managed to escape without serious injury.
The house, however, is completely destroyed.
More details will be posted as they become available.

I had some hope for the new council when it was elected last fall. All except the mayor, whos likely the most despised person in Paradise. Not calling for a re-election when the vote ended in a tie only added to the resentment residents have for him. Yes, he followed the rules but seriously, why not have another vote if there was no clear-cut winner? The answer is fairly obvious.
For well over twenty years Paradise has been promised a new arena, and for well over twenty years people have been waiting. But with Saturdays fire that levelled a home in town, there is bound to be talk of building our own fire hall. And rightly so.
There are, and have been, petitions circulating in town and on-line for the provincial government to step up and contribute money for a new arena. No such petition or plans exist for a fire hall and it has quietly slipped under the radar.
Land has been set aside for an arena and the town says it will put up one-third of the money. But that funding is primarily monies the government gives the town like all other towns in the province for operating costs. We can't expect more money from the provincial government and Minister Whalen has said as much.
On Saturday a fire destroyed a home in town, a house that was situated further in Topsail Road - among thousands of other homes - and the response time by the Mt. Pearl and CBS fire stations was not good. The house was completely destroyed and thankfully there were no injuries. This time. Its not a matter of if someone will get hurt; its a question of when. The fire hall should be the councils top priority. But it appears they hoped it would go away.
Before the election last fall I emailed councillors and asked what their bigger priority was an arena or a fire hall. Councillors Willis, Quilty, and Mayor Wiseman did not bother to respond. I actually spoke to Quilty, who blamed the entire mess on former mayor and now Municipal Affairs Minister Diane Whelan. What a cop out. Quilty also said her three email addresses were not working so she did not get any emails. Okay.
Only councillors Bobbett and English responded. (I should mention that former councillor Fred Thornhill also responded). I plan to email the two new councillors Burton and Laurie and get their views.
The towns website has a link to its plans and petition for an arena, but no such link or plan exists for a fire hall. There is no mention of a fire hall in the towns five-year plan. And oddly enough, we have $500,000 for improvements to the town hall and a clock tower (you cant make this stuff up) but no money is set aside for a fire station.
Without question, we need an arena. But we also need fire protection. Perhaps, its time for council to get their priorities in order. Otherwise, we have to show them the door. -

Well here we go again another house fire and more people talk. Next week the house fire will be forgotten about. Lets do the numbers a good fire truck roughtly
350 000. 4 - 6 firemen at about 70 000 a year each roughtly 280 000 - 420 000 a year. 6 firemen 1 truck roughtly 700 000. One house one night summit drive roughtly 1.1 million in ( one night ) 364 more days of the year ??????? lets keep track. Residents of paradise time to start putting up. No one thinks or can imagine they will be victims of a house fire of course but maybe nows the time to start thinking.

Donny the house that burnt down is in a subdivision of 750 000 to 1.5 million dollar homes. People don't flock to Paradise because they can't afford anywhere else. The lack of municipality facilities has nothing to do with the people who live there.
Paradise had the second highest rate of new house price growth in the first quarter at 25.1 per cent to $333,388. -St. John's Real Estate -

I have to agree, enough is enough!!!! Time for Mr. Mayor to get his priorities straight!!! Paradise MUST have a Fire Station !!! Then it would be nice for their to be a Swimming Arena!

The silence from Mayor Wiseman is deafening. Oh well at least he still has his parking spot with his name on in in front of the Town Hall. Please Mr Mayor tell all of us wht you think about this sad situation. Perhaps you dont really care any more now that you have manipulated your way back into the mayors chair.

Come on boy's. You moved into rinky dink Paradise knowing full well what you were getting into. No hospital, no sidewalks, no firehall, no arena, no swimmng pool, congested intersections and school yards, houses built on tiny pieces of land. That's why you got your house for a song. If you want a real living experience you have to pay for it. There's a reason folks flock to Paradise - they can't afford to live anywhere else. Get used to it!
