The federal government today announced it will assist Marystown in developing a marine industrial park to support the growing marine services sector on the Burin Peninsula.

Keith Ashfield, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), made the funding announcement of $1.15 million at a business luncheon in Marystown.

"The Government of Canada, through ACOA, is pleased to support the town of Marystown in the development of this vital infrastructure for the people of the Burin Peninsula," said Ashfield. "Our investment of $1.15 million will help the region secure the heavy industrial capacity required for further growth and development of its marine services sector."

The project will include site preparation for 20 lots with six fully serviced lots completed as a first phase. Initial work will include site excavation and clearing, road construction and the installation of water and sewer infrastructure for the industrial park.

"The town of Marystown, the Chamber of Commerce and many other groups and individuals on the Burin Peninsula have been eagerly awaiting funding to make a marine industrial park a reality," said Marystown Mayor Sam Synard.

"This project will enhance the business infrastructure in our region by building on and complementing our existing oil and gas and marine services capabilities."
