The chairman of the committee trying to find a new president of Memorial University says progress is being made.

"Our efforts to engage the public and the university community in this search have been largely successful," said Bob Simmonds in a release.

"They have resulted in a number of candidates being nominated and the receipt of applications for the position. We still have a lot of work to do as we build our list of potential candidates, then undertake analysis towards finding the top candidate. But I am very pleased with the results so far."

Simmonds, who is also chairman of Memorial's Board of Regents, added the search is on schedule and progressing as expected.

The committee met July 16 to receive an update on the search.

The briefing for Memorial's Presidential Search Committee was provided by Janet Wright and Associates, the consulting firm co-ordinating the search.

The position has been advertised locally, nationally and internationally and candidate nominations have been sought from the university community and the general public.

The will receive its next progress report in mid-September.

The search for a president has been a controversial issue over the past year, with charges government interfered in the process and outcry that former acting president Eddie Campbell was rejected for the job.
