Canadian real estate agents have approved proposed reforms to the rules governing the services they offer to home buyers and sellers.
About 300 representatives from each real estate board and association across Canada met in Ottawa to discuss clarifications to rules governing the Multiple Listing Service owned by the Canadian Real Estate Association.
The association presented proposed amendments to clarify language in rules that the bureau says restrict individuals' ability to conduct real estate transactions without an agent.
The changes approved today could make it easier for individuals to sell their own houses without an agent.
The federal Competition Bureau alleges the real estate association makes it impossible for consumers to choose "a la carte" services from real estate agents, leading to reduced competition and higher fees.
CREA's President Georges Pahud says he is pleased that the amendments have passed and believes the association has fully addressed concerns raised by the Competition Bureau.
