Corner Brook Pulp and Paper will lose a number of its management positions, as well as unionized employees.
Mill sources report 15 managers and approximately 55 unionized positions will be cut from the Corner Brook mill itself.
There will also be cuts to forestry workers.
While rumours had been circulating about the potential shutdown of another paper machine, mill management told employees it will continue to operate as a two-machine mill.
In early March, Kruger, the mill's parent company, announced the shutdown of the No. 4 paper machine.
While operation was scheduled to resume May 17, the company extended the shutdown to an indefinite status.

Local politicing of a global economic event is petty and low brow, especially when it involves a dying industry. Paper is history didn't you know? Or did you submit your comment via paper mail today ?

Hey Bones, what have you done to improve the quality of life for those put out of work in this province? Nothing from what I can tell.

We are heading down a slippery slope here, and people like you need to wake up and smell the coffee. Time is running out. What will you say when we are at 20-30-40% unemployed in this province? What has your king Danny done to create sustainable industry and employment for the people of the province?

As long as people like you get your cheque you will continue to back a lost cause. What will you do once you are cut off? Cry like a baby I bet.

What in blue blazes does the operations of a private company in an industry that is very rapidly shrinking on a global scale have to do with Danny Williams?

If members of the peanut gallery like Nate spent their time doing constructive things to actually generate value instead of sitting around commenting on message boards and (I'm guessing here but it's probably not much of a stretch) calling open line shows complaining about how the government is doing everybody wrong, it'd be a much better place.

Jumpin' jeez, if the government is giving welfare money to people it's bad, and if they're not spending even more money to artificially prop up lost causes then that's bad too?

So... do the taxpayers of NL get to bail THESE workers out as well? Seems I chose the wrong workplace - a solid one.

Nice to see some petty, ignornat, nasty little minds still at work in your province. You take joy at the hardships of thousands then chide them for losing thier jobs than will chastise them again if they apply for EI or welfare. I don't know who you think you are, Nasty Nate, but yoiu are proof that Darwin was wrong.

Nasty Nate: Danny's welfare province of has beens? Aren't you just the bright, cheery cup of tea the people of Corner Brook need to hear. Maybe it isn't a lottery we need to have, maybe it's a petition to get rid of the likes of you! Don't you have a reasonable,or informed,or even half-educated suggestion or comment on this very harsh reality for the region?

I'd like to remind you that the tax dollars you speak of belong to government employees just as much as they do, you. The government employees benefiting from them are also huge contributors to the economy and the TAX BASE. See how irrelevant your complaint is?

Me from NL: Is it your claim that this was caused by Pender because the town wasted their money on the new city hall? If they scrap the plans, do you believe these jobs will be saved? See how obtuse your suggestion is? Looks like you enjoy laughter, so I'll throw in an LOL, hahaha. Karma is a bi**h too, so I expect your laughter at the expense of this town might bite you in the a** one day.

No matter what kind of spin anyone wants to play, the writing is, and has been on the wall for the entire pulp and paper industry for quite some time now. As disheartening as this is for the affected workers and the area, it's hardly the fault of Kruger, or any politician. This is obviously a move intended to streamline and shield the company against massive shrinkage of their entire industry. Whether it works or not still remains to be seen. It's oddly refreshing to hear of some sense of fairness from the company, as the layoffs include some management positions and not just the everyday laborer which seem to be the ones' that take the hit every single time. The one that's history is AB, and the people of Corner Brook should easily be able to see, through that example, that their provincial government won't leave them to rot.

That's quite an ignorant comment from Me - what sick individual takes pleasure from such a bad news story? The mill has been the economic foundation of not only the City of Corner Brook, but many communities in the region. Real people, our friends, relatives, fellow citizens and their families are having their lives affected. Perhaps you could show a little compassion instead of feeding your ego driven pettiness.

Hey Nate: Too bad you missed the point! I've done as much as you have to improve the lives of people outside my area of residence, lol......nothing. Let me ask, what are you gonna do when unemployment DOESN'T reach 20-30-40%? I predict the same thing.....NOTHING, lol. As long as people like me get my cheque? I must be one of the citizens in this welfare province am I? Your comments are not only offensive, but grossly misinformed and based in crap. Where I get my money is of no concern to you, but I am in direct control of it, not the government. Carry on with your assumptions and misinformed opinions, but whatever you do, don't feel bad or display a single sign of compassion for your fellow NL'ers. After all, what should residents of a welfare province expect, wha?

Welcome to Danny's Welfare Province of has beens. Wonder just how many real jobs we will have taken from us this summer?

Maybe we need to have a lottery to see who can guess the numbers. At least this way one poor out of work slob will be able to pay the bills this winter with the winnings.

The rest of the people who are tossed out onto the streets sure will not be able to.

I think Danny should start to can a large number of Government Employees as well. We have far too many that take far too much of our tax dollars. It would be a great way to show that Government can save money, and not waste it for a change.
