The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) provincial council announced today it is backing Premier Danny Williams on government's position regarding the Hydro-Quebec takeover of New Brunswick Power.
Council chairman Bob Clarke said the takeover could have a monumental impact on the development of the Lower Churchill project restricting the economic development of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Clarke said the IBEW locals in Newfoundland and Labrador also stand by IBEW Local 37 in New Brunswick which represents employees with New Brunswick Power. Local 37 represents about 2,200 workers and has expressed disagreement with this sale.
Clarke said the proposed sale has serious implications for the future energy needs of the entire Atlantic region, but most importantly to the employees of New Brunswick Power. As well, there are no clear announcements from the politicians in New Brunswick or Quebec, that Newfoundland and Labrador can wheel power through New Brunswick, should the Lower Churchill go ahead.
