Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro announced today that effective June 30, over-the-counter customer service will no longer be available at its Happy Valley-Goose Bay office.

Local customers will be notified of this change and have several options available for service requests and bill payments.

Hydro says there has been a consistent decline in the number of customers using the office to pay their bills and conduct business with the company.

Since 2004, customer over-the-counter payments have declined by more than 30 per cent and only three per cent of all Hydro's transactions are handled through the office.

"We provide customers with a number of options for service and bill payments," sayd Jim Haynes, Hydro's vice president of Regulated Operations.

"We've has been incorporating various service options, at customers' request, over the last few years and they're readily taking advantage of these alternatives. Approximately 97 per cent of our customers are now using these payment and contact methods."

Existing payment options include pre-authorized payments, mail, Internet and payment through financial institutions.

All service requests and inquiries are handled through Hydro's customer communications centre at 1-888-737-1296, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

If customers have their account number and meter number they can access account information 24 hours a day by calling Hydro's automated customer service system toll-free at 1-888-737-1296 or they can log on through Hydro's website at www.nlh.nl.ca.

Power outages, emergencies and updates can continue to be reported and accessed through the 24-hour toll free number 1-888-764-9376.

Oh well, they took it from Labradaor West over 2 years ago, and we have a higher population than HV/GB. We had to get over it.

What's the big deal? I have lived in 4 different municipalities, 3 of them in Newfoundland and Labrador, and this is the first time I have ever heard of over-counter service. It's only what you get used to, that's all.
