The basic Air Foodlift Subsidy program (AFS) has commenced for Labrador's North Coast communities and Black Tickle.
Retailers in Nain, Natuashish, Hopedale, Makkovik, Postville, Rigolet and Black Tickle have been notified, with retailer claim and information packages to follow.
According to a news release, under the program, a subsidy is paid to retail stores to offset the high cost of flying perishable foods into these communities. Retailers are required to pass these savings on to the consumer on the cost of goods sold.
The basic AFS program goes into effect five days after the marine service ends and finishes five days after the marine service begins. The start and finish dates, vary depending on ice conditions.
The program will begin for Norman Bay and Williams Harbour when the MV Marine Eagle has completed its season run. The South Coast and Straits can expect the AFS to start when the MV Apollo can no longer cross the Strait of Belle Isle due to ice conditions.
