NWT government hoping to banish paper, plastic bags with new fees

The government of the Northwest Territories is hoping to curb the use of plastic and paper grocery bags by implementing new fees for such products.
Single-use paper and plastic bags will now cost 25 cents each at grocery stores across the territory.
Michael Miltenberger, the minister of environment and natural resources, says switching to reusable bags is an easy way to help protect the environment.
The government says it plans to eventually eliminate all single-use shopping bags in the Northwest Territories.
The new fee doesn't apply to bags used for unpackaged bulk items, prescriptions or bags used as the primary packaging on prepared foods.
Ontario liquor stores have banned the use of plastic bags and cities such as Leaf Rapids, Man., and Huntingdon, Que., have banned them within city limits.
