The maker of OneTouch SureStep test strips has issued a voluntary recall of some lots of the product used by diabetics to measure blood-glucose levels.
LifeScan Canada Ltd., in consultation with Health Canada, issued the recall Thursday because specific lots of the test strips may provide low results when blood glucose is greater than 22.2 mmol/L.
The company advises that anyone whose reading is greater than 22.2 mmol/L with these test strips should confirm the result using another method because actual blood glucose may be significantly higher than indicated.
Consumers should retest blood glucose using a meter other than OneTouch SureStep or contact their health-care provider for further instructions, the company says.
LifeScan advises consumers to check if their test strips are among the affected lots by calling the company's toll-free customer service line, 1-866-339-3045, between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. ET, Monday to Friday. Replacement product will be shipped immediately, the Burnaby, B.C., company says.
Any cases of serious adverse incidents involving patients using OneTouch SureStep strips should be reported to LifeScan Canada (1-866-339-3045) or Health Canada (1-800-267-9675).
