It's time to clean out basements and sheds and get rid of household hazardous waste in an environmentally friendly way, the province's Multi-Materials Stewardship Board (MMSB) said today.
The MMSB announced details of its 2010 collection program that will give residents from several communities around the province the opportunity to dispose of their household hazardous waste a convenient and environmentally friendly manner.
"People want to protect the environment and we are seeing more and more Newfoundlanders and Labradorians taking a responsible approach and disposing of this extremely harmful waste in a safe and convenient manner," Charlene Johnson, Minister of Environment and Conservation, said in a news release.
"The high participation in last year's Household Hazardous Waste Program is evidence that there is a growing commitment in our province to protect our environment and divert waste from our landfills - helping us get closer to achieving our 50 per cent waste diversion goal."
The collection program has grown each year with last year's event the most successful to date with more than 130,000 litres of household hazardous waste collected and disposed of in a proper manner.
This year, the MMSB is partnering with 10 municipalities throughout the province to conduct 10 collection events. The first event will take place on May 1 in Marystown.
Collection events will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the dates below free of charge:
• May 1 in Marystown at Marystown Municipal Depot on McGettigan Boulevard;
• May 2 in Bay Roberts at Ascension Collegiate;
• May 15 in Corner Brook at Pepsi Civic Centre;
• May 29 in Grand Falls-Windsor at Centennial Field;
• May 30 in Gander at Elizabeth Drive Shopping Centre;
• June 12 in Carbonear/Harbour Grace at Conception Bay Community Centre, Water Street, Carbonear;
• June 13 in Clarenville at the CN Railway Station, Marine Drive;
• Sept. 11 in Happy Valley-Goose Bay at E.J. Broomfield Memorial Arena;
• Sept. 18 in Stephenville at Ramp Section of Carolina Avenue;
• Oct. 16 in Grand Falls-Windsor at Centennial Field;
• Oct. 17 in Gander at Elizabeth Drive Shopping Centre.

Taxpayer...that is because we now have a facility in St. John's where you can go to drop off yourself on Saturdays starting in June.

I see the release doesn't mention St. John's -Mount Pearl. Congrats Minister Dithers on getting your name on a release to look like you are doing something.

Just dump your poison in a pond, or stream. It seems to be the best solution environmentally for mining companies like Vale Inco, so why not for us?

Why can't there be a day when they would pick it up at the curb? I certainly don't want 'hazardous waste' in my car wherein I transport animals and children. Charge a few cents for it!
