Water Street landmark business to close its doors

A second Water Street retail landmark is closing its doors.

Melendy’s Kuffer Korner, in operation in downtown St. John’s for 55 years — the past 50 on Water Street — will be closing its stores by the end of the year.

Current manager Holly Melendy Dalton — the daughter of Karl Melendy, who opened the store in the ‘50s, said the store is closing for a combination of reasons, including a softer economy.

One of the main reasons, Dalton said, is the lack of downtown parking, which she called “a nightmare.”

“Not just for customers, but for us. I have to park way up the west end of Water Street. I have about a 10-minute walk every morning,” she said, chuckling.

Apart from that, Dalton said, it’s just the right time.

“The family, we’ve done it now for over 50 years. We say 50 years, but it’s actually 50 years of retail. It’s been more than 50 years that my dad actually started the business, and I think it’s just time.”

The store will close permanently once it has sold off all of its remaining inventory.

I have worked, lived , owned & ran a business and raised a family in St. John's over a period of eighteen years. I also have known Karl Melendy and his brother over the same time. They were and are an honest and good family to deal with. I feel sad to hear they are leaving the City but their reasons are sound and I'm sure they leave without leaving any bad friends. Good Luck Karl & Family; I wish you all the very best in whatever you do and prosperity for the future. The City can and should make operating a business, especially in the downtown sector, a more enjoyable experience for owners & staff than they do at present.

I was downtown on busineess a few days ago , parked in front of Melendys. When I got back to my car (2 min late) I had a ticket . The response time from a 911 call would not have been faster.

It's all about the PARKING MESS! Parking has been a mess down town for years and to add fuel to the fire they added " The White Elephant" ( Mile One) which turned a parking Mess into a NIGHTMARE!!! Many people have given up supporting Mile One because of parking Woes. Our City Meter Maids are very Quick to reward Mile One supporters with a "free Parking Ticket". So we know where this Lady is comming from.

Sad to see another business falter downtown. I agree somewhat with Joe..This council is giving into the older and richer citizens who do not want to improve the downtown area but keep it in the '50's. I'm all for heritage and culture but something needs to be done downtown. I parked there today and walked straight up Water Street to do business and got caught in the heavy rain walking back to find a ticket. I didn't think it would take so long but neglicted to cover the walking time..next time, the business will be done coming to me in Mount Pearl.

Sad as it was a good store ,with good service and nice products. The incompentent city council is responsible for the downtown parking mess and have failed to address it. The members of council are to busy doing nothing and informing the public of their indifferance to the city affairs by staging flower power meetings evey monday night and as an after thought turning the finger down at solid construction proposals. Fortis is next to go and I think will choose Nova Scotia as their main hub for head office and related affairs. I firmly believe the way St.John's cows down to Mount Pearl and Randy Simms is one oof the most shameful things I have ever seen in my life of looking at city councils come and go. Doc and the boys with the heritage girls aboard run a sinking city. Watch your taxes spirial to feed the incompetence of that crowd.
