Nova Scotia man charged in two murders that were six years apart

SYDNEY, N.S. - Police in Cape Breton have charged a man will murdering two young women in separate cases that span six years.

Thomas Ted Barrett of Glace Bay has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder in the deaths Laura Catherine Jessome and Brett Elizabeth MacKinnon.

Both women were 21 years old.

MacKinnon's remains were found in 2008 near Glace Bay after she disappeared in June 2006.

Jessome's body was discovered inside a hockey bag along Cape Breton's Mira River on May 25, 2012.

Cape Breton Regional Police say the 37-year-old accused was already in custody in Halifax when he was charged Thursday.

Four other men have also been charged in the cases.
