EDMUNDSTON, N.B. - RCMP say a Quebec man has been fined more than $80,000 for possessing illegal cigarettes in New Brunswick three years ago.

Robert Belanger of Pierrefond pleaded guilty to three charges Wednesday in Edmundston provincial court.

The 78-year-old man was charged after police seized 150,000 contraband cigarettes near Edmundston in May 2010.

But police say he failed to appear in court to answer to the charges.

He was arrested last July on arrest warrants.
