Newfoundland and Labrador's first ombudsman, Ambrose Peddle, dies at 86

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - Ambrose Peddle, Newfoundland and Labrador's first ombudsman, has died.

He was 86.

Born in Corner Brook, Peddle had a long history in municipal, provincial and federal politics before he was named to the ombudsman's office.

He served as mayor of Windsor before being elected to the provincial legislature in 1962 as a Progressive Conservative.

Peddle also served as the Tory MP for Grand Falls-White Bay-Labrador in the House of Commons between 1968 and 1972.

In 1975, Peddle was appointed the province's first ombudsman, a position he held until 1990.

Peddle's obituary says he died Monday.
