WINNIPEG - Manitoba is set to ban the use of synthetic chemical pesticides on lawns and other areas.

The NDP government has introduced a bill that would forbid the pesticides on lawns, school grounds and near health facilities.

The chemicals would still be allowed on golf courses, farm land and residential gardens.

Because of the exemptions, synthetic pesticides would still be sold in stores.

Conservation Minister Gord Mackintosh says there would be fines for offenders.

The proposed law follows similar legislation in other provinces, including Ontario.
