OTTAWA - Ottawa police have laid human trafficking charges against two people from the embassy for the Philippines who have since fled the country.
Police say the case involves a 26-year-old woman who was brought into Canada as a nanny by the couple whom they allege was exploited for financial and material benefit between July 2009 and December 2013.
Bueneflor Cruz, 44, and Robert Cruz, 45, are both charged with trafficking, obtaining a benefit by trafficking and withholding or destroying documents.
Robert Cruz is also charged threatening bodily harm and mischief.
Police sought a waiver of diplomatic immunity in the case, but were told by Foreign Affairs that the pair had returned to the Philippines.
The victim remains in Canada in a safe location.
