Trial delayed for man charged in Halifax beating death, asks to fire lawyer

HALIFAX - A man accused in the fatal beating of a gay rights activist in Halifax has asked to fire his lawyer at the start of his trial.

Andre Noel Denny of Membertou, N.S., is charged with second-degree murder in the beating death of 49-year-old Raymond Taavel.

Judge Peter Rosinski of the Nova Scotia Supreme Court is holding an in-camera hearing to determine if Denny should be permitted to end his relationship with defence lawyer Don Murray.

Taavel died outside the Menz bar on Gottingen Street in Halifax during an altercation in April 2012.

Denny's trial was scheduled to begin today.
