CALGARY - A well blowout that spewed nearly 500 barrels of oil and water into a central Alberta field last January was caused by a company not following its own fracking guidelines.

Alberta's energy regulator says that Midway Energy was too close to another well when it began fracturing the bedrock more than 1,800 metres underground.

The Energy Resources Conservation Board says that caused the oil and water to shoot out from the nearby well.

Because no regulations governing the practice existed at the time, no penalties have been assessed.

But the board is currently drafting new rules to ensure wells are far enough apart to prevent a repeat of this kind of blowout.

Midway Energy has since been bought out by Whitecap Resources (TSX:WCP).
