WINNIPEG - Canadian food processor Legumex Walker Inc. says it has begun producing and shipping canola oil and meal out of its new plant in the state of Washington.

The Winnipeg-based company (TSX:LWP) expects that by the first half of the year, the facility will be able to produce as much as 400 tonnes per day of canola oil, which is widely used in food processing and cooking.

In addition to owning 85 per cent of the Pacific Coast Canola LLC plant, Legumex Walker also recently acquired Keystone Grain Ltd., Canada's largest processor and marketer of sunflowers and sunflower products in August.

Legumex Walker is a processor and merchandiser of pulses and other special crops and canola products, with 11 processing facilities in key growing regions in the Prairie provinces, the U.S. Midwest and China.

According to the company, canola oil accounts for only 10 per cent of the food oils market in the U.S., compared to 70 per cent in Canada.
