Cape service launches second season in Del. with additional vessel to ply Lewes-Rehoboth Canal

LEWES, Del. - The Cape Water Taxi is returning for a second season along the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal, and with that comes expanded offerings.

The service was to make its 2013 debut May 24, operating on a limited Friday-Sunday spring schedule, before expanding to seven days a week June 14.

New for 2013 is a second vessel, The Discovery, a 54-foot custom-built boat with twin 150 HP engines, two restrooms and seating for 72. The Discovery will complement The Mummichog, the 26-seat, 35-foot boat which operated last year, and it's expected to make its debut in early June, according to Cape Water Taxi owner David Green.

"It will enable us to be more flexible on our schedule with the taxi route," he said about operating the larger boat. "We can't wait to get going."

The taxi was expected to begin the spring schedule operating from Fisherman's Wharf in Lewes and the Rehoboth Bay Marina in Dewey Beach, Green said, ultimately moving to the dock at the Rusty Rudder.

The new year will also bring a new stop for service this summer, as the Cape Water Taxi will travel to Long Neck for eco tours and sunset cruises. Trips will originate from the Bayside's Paradise Grill docks on Long Neck Road.

Green said the Long Neck service should begin in the first or second week of June.

"There's a lot of people out there who I think would enjoy what we do," he said about the expanded service to Long Neck. "It's absolutely beautiful out there."

Two new cruise programs will also be offered this year. A 90-minute "Kid's Camp" cruise based out of Long Neck will give passengers an opportunity to learn about the inland waterways and give them a chance to go crabbing and line fishing.

A second cruise, called "To The Bay and Back," is a two-hour sightseeing cruise, which will originate in Lewes and take passengers to the Rehoboth Bay.

Tickets can be purchased in advance online at, by calling 302-644-7334 or at the dock.
