TORONTO - Emerging and established talents will be celebrated at the first-ever Canadian Arts & Fashion Awards early next year.
Billed as the first event of its kind in Canada, the inaugural CAFA gala will feature 10 award categories honouring homegrown talent within the fashion industry.
The Canadian event appears to follow in a similar tradition established by the British Fashion Council and the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Both councils stage annual award ceremonies in their respective countries recognizing influential fashion talents.
Categories for the CAFAs will include designer of the year honours for womenswear, menswear and accessories and an outstanding achievement award to celebrate the career of an established designer.
The International Canadian Designer award will honour someone who has achieved success abroad and brought attention to Canadian talent on the world stage.
The Canadian Style award will recognize a recipient who embodies the spirit of the country and serves as an unofficial ambassador for homegrown fashion and culture. The Image Maker will be presented to a Canadian photographer or filmmaker who has made a significant impact within the Canadian industry. Awards will also be handed out to the model and stylist of the year.
Another honour for emerging talent — the lone CAFA award which is self-nominated — will recognize an innovative designer "emerging as a true creative force in Canadian fashion."
Nominees are slated to be announced at a special ceremony in October, and winners will be selected through a confidential vote by the CAFA jury next January.
Confirmed members of the panel include: fashion and media maven Jeanne Beker, Elle Canada editor-in-chief Noreen Flanagan, Fashion Magazine editor-in-chief Bernadette Morra, Flare Magazine fashion director Tiyana Grulovic and Lisa Tant, Holt Renfrew's vice-president, fashion editor.
The inaugural Canadian Arts & Fashion Awards gala is slated to take place Feb. 1, 2014 at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto. ____
