Car crash in southwestern Nova Scotia kills mother, puts son in hospital

BEAR RIVER, N.S. - A woman is dead and her 18-year-old son is in hospital after a car crash in southwestern Nova Scotia early Sunday.

RCMP say the 38-year-old woman missed a sharp turn on a dark section of Reserve Road in Bear River, about 10 kilometres east of Digby, shortly after 1 a.m.

The Mounties say the vehicle suffered extensive damage to its front end and emergency crews had to use the Jaws of Life to extract the dead driver.

The young man was taken to hospital in Digby with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say both mother and son were from Digby County.

A traffic analyst has been called in to investigate the scene.
