This is National Volunteer Week, and it's a time when communities across the country thank thousands of people who give freely of their time to improve the lives of others.

This is National Volunteer Week, and it's a time when communities across the country thank thousands of people who give freely of their time to improve the lives of others.

The Town of Conception Bay South's Volunteer Appreciation Fun-ction will be held at Worsley Park Thursday. More than 100 people have received special invitations to represent their community groups at the function. In fact, up to three representatives may attend.

Organizer Jennifer Bourne says the "Town of Conception Bay South will recognize the positive impact that local volunteers make to their own respective groups, make in the Town of Conception Bay South as a whole, and make outside the boundaries of our municipality. At this function, we will highlight some of the accomplishments and duties of the attending groups and representatives through promotional displays."

The town will also honour youth volunteers and will name the Conception Bay South Youth Vol-unteer of the Year for 2008.

Monument of Honour

Conception Bay South Monument of Honour Committee is asking for your support of their fundraising efforts to construct the Conception Bay South Monument of Honour.

Phase 1, which consisted of moving the Topsail War Memorial to the new site in Long Pond, was completed in 2008. That memorial recognizes the men from our town who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the world wars.

"With the support of the public, businesses, government and service clubs, we will complete Phase 2 in 2009," states committee chairman Wayne Miller. "The planned walkways and walls will be in place for the 2009 Remembrance Day service."

A fundraising dinner will be held at Royal Canadian Legion Branch 50 in Conception Bay South on May 23. The dinner will be followed by an auction. Organizers are seeking financial and in-kind support of the event.

Tickets to attend the dinner and auction cost $30 per person. Tables of 10 are available at a cost of $300 per table on a reservation basis for companies and individuals. And, of course, the committee will gladly accept donations of cash and in-kind support in the form of services and auction items.

An impressive array of items will be available at auction - golf packages, hotel accommodations, jewelry, a boat tour, gas coupons, original artwork and many other items.

"This event will be an outstanding success with your support," said Miller.

"To purchase tickets, make a donation, or for further information, please contact Jo-Anne Stone at 834-5637 or myself at 744-2657."

Conception Bay South Monument of Honour Trust is a registered charitable organization and will provide receipts for tax purposes upon request.
