Opposition Leader Yvonne Jones says the current air subsidy for the communities of Williams Harbour and Black Tickle in Labrador be extended year-round based on their isolation and transportation challenges.
According to a news release, Jones states that in December, the provincial government announced an air travel subsidy of 50 per cent for residents of the two communities due to their inability to travel by boat or snowmobile. The high cost of air travel, several hundred dollars for a short trip to the nearest community of Cartwright, is too expensive for most residents, she said. Those people without access to a boat or snowmobile are often stranded for most of the year.
"I certainly want to thank (Transportation Minister Tom Hedderson) for recognizing the current situation facing the residents of Williams Harbour and Black Tickle and providing a subsidy that will ensure they have access to more affordable air travel while ice conditions have isolated their communities," Jones said. "While government has reacted to this immediate need, I certainly feel this program should be extended year-round to recognize the many geographic and transportation issues facing residents."

I agree with all the comments so far. If you don't like it, move. I'm tired of working and paying high taxes to keep communities like this alive. No industry, no town.

gee people....do you think that's what the rest of Canada say's about us on the Island of Newfoundland, move them all off ...cancel the ferry service....why do I have to pay for that...I live in Ont. Why don't they move!

Don't like the isolation - move. I am sick to death of people who choose to live in rural Newfoundland and Labrador looking for subsidies (that includes the ridiculous cost of keeping a ferry going for the few who live on Bell Island)

If travel subsidies are going to be provided to the denizens of Williams Harbour and Black Tickle, travel subsidies must also be provided to the denizens of Bunghole Tickle (that includes me), Kweesy Krotch Cove, Burnt Bunions Bay, Gout Gut, and every other remote, isolated, dying bunghole in the province. Ahhh, the road to Black Tickle is back! Yvonne is right, and year round subsidies will allow the transportation of unreported lobster catches to take place a lot more easy as well! Way to go NL Opposition! lol!

wow, NS to NF ferry service is a constitutional obligation. While currently being fractionally subsidized, it should be fully subsidized as part of the Trans Canada Highway System. Every other bunghole tickle in NL does not qualify under the Terms.

I for one do not like the fact that I have to pay for people choosing to live in an isolated area of an already isolated province. If they choose to live there, then deal with what comes from living there or move. I am all for moving folks from random islands and isolated coastal communities to a community of their choice that is accessible by road (without building new Roads/Causeways, we have enough trouble trying to maintain the ones we got). I know it is only going to take a matter of time for most of these communities to die off as no young person is going to stay there. So I guess until then I will have to pay for your ferries, causeways, cheaper airfares, schools for 10 kids, etc.
