Salvation Army Christmas kettles bring in record-breaking $18 million

The Salvation Army has added up the money dropped into its Christmas kettles and says Canadians donated a record amount.
The organization raised $18 million, surpassing the record of $16 million set the previous year.
Salvation Army Commissioner William Francis says the organization is being challenged to meet a growing demand for its services.
He says thanks to the "remarkable generosity of the Canadian public," the organization is confident it can meet this demand.
The $18 million figure includes only money donated to The Salvation Army's physical kettles.
The Salvation Army is continuing to tally dollars raised through phone, direct mail and other sources during the Christmas season.
In addition to kettle donations, the Salvation Army also saw an increase in online giving during November and December.
In both months, more than $3.4 million was raised online, an 18 per cent increase from 2008.
