The Newfoundland and Labrador Nurses Union (NLNU) made two contributions to local and international causes today.
A donation of $9,700 was made in support of Haiti relief efforts and, locally, $4,000 was donated to the Kids Eat Smart Foundation.
"It is a natural response for nurses in this province, and across the country, to reach out and help those in need," said Debbie Forward, NLNU president.
"The people of Haiti are in desperate need of specialized medical care and treatment. Supporting international aid organizations is one of the quickest and most effective ways we can get this help to victims and their families."
Funds for Haiti were donated to two organizations - Doctors Without Borders through the Canadian Federation of Nurses' Unions, which has collected $65,000 to date from its member organizations. In a separate fundraising effort, an additional $1,700 raised by the Centre for Nursing Studies through a cake sale was provided to the Canadian Red Cross.
NLNU continues to show its support for the work of the Kids Eat Smart Foundation, Forward said.
"The Kids Eat Smart Foundation does incredible work to support children in eating healthy," said Forward. "The foundation provides over 50,000 children with nutritious meals and snacks each and every day. Nurses are proud to support this work, which is helping to build healthy communities across our province."

Debbie you start a strike saying you need more money and what not yet you can donate money to causes that arent helping your nurses. You should be fired. You a scar on healthcare as far as im concerned. Nothing more then a greedy politician lining his pockets.
