Newfoundland MP Siobhan Coady says Ottawa's lack of committment to continue funding for a local environmental group is an example of how the federal government is abandoning environmental issues in this country.
Coady said she has written federal Environment Minister Jim Prentice twice regarding funding for the Northeast Avalon Coastal Action Plan, a group that continues to seek a renewal of their partnership agreement with Environment Canada. She has also raised the matter in the House of Commons.
"They are out of touch with the importance of community groups and the importance of the work they do in this country," Coady said in a news release.
"For them to not renew funding for a group like the Northeast Avalon Coastal Action Plan, that has been so instrumental in raising public awareness about the need to clean up St. John's Harbour, is totally unacceptable."
In her letter Coady encouraged Environment Minister Jim Prentice to become personally involved in this issue and see that there is no break in funding for this very important community driven initiative.
"Unless there is a renewal through Environment Canada's Atlantic Priority Ecosystem Initiative or some other source, funding for this very worthwhile initiative will expire on March 31, 2010," Coady said.
"This group has not received a response to their funding request and are concerned that a break in funding will have a very serious impact on the important work they do in the community."
ACAP involves 16 non-profit organizations across Atlantic Canada. In 2008 alone, over 3,000 students and youth participated in soil and water sampling projects, environmental education, outreach and engagement initiatives; over 1,100 volunteers throughout Atlantic Canada received training and subsequently provided over 35,000 hours of time advancing the region's environment and conservation initiatives.

This is the second time The Telegram has published Ms. Coady's position on this issue.

Ms. Coady is the critic for Treasury Board, which in case she has not read today's papers, will conduct public consultations on a new 2 tiered public pension strategy.

Ms. Coady did not attend the PSAC pensioners meeting in St. John's earlier this month, either.

Maybe the critic's position Mr. Ignatieff appointed her to is too much for her?

She needs to stop recycling old press releases and get down to the business of looking out for the concerns of her constituents which include pensioners.

    Siobhan Coady:

You and your Party supported the Budget and the Government which is making these decisions.

You had your chance and did nothing.

    So Just Shut Up!!

The federal government ignored her letter the first time. The federal Budget, which Siobhan Coady and the Liberals supported came down weeks ago and the funding for the project was not there. There is one week to go before the funding is cut off.

This is lip service. This is 2 faced, supporting a Budget that cancels funding for this project and then issuing press releases complaining about funding cuts.
