• The January 2014 meeting of the Avalon Prostate Cancer Support Group will be held at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 14 at Daffodil Place.

• A free Bereavement Session for people who have lost a loved one is being held on Tuesday, Jan. 14, from 7-9 p.m. at the Miller Centre. No registration is required.  For further information call Lisa Higgins at 777-8972

• There will be a variety concert of contemporary and traditional choral and choir music on Friday Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. at the Salvation Army St. John’s Citadel on Adams Avenue in aid of the Centre for Life. Performances by Avalonia, Conway,Coastal Sound Community Choir CBS,Corpus Christi Parish Choir, International Gospel Choir of NL, Salvation Army St. John’s Citadel Songster Brigade, St. Teresa’s Parish Choir. • The St. Andrews Society of Newfoundland and Labrador will be celebrating the 255th anniversary of the birth of Scottish Poet Robert Burns on Jan. 25, 2014, 7 p.m. at the  Royal Canadian Legion in Pleastantville. Dinner with Haggis, bagpipes, poetry and Scottish Country Dancing will fill the evening. Tickets are $50 each available from David Allison at dallison@nl.rogers.com or 579-6114.

• Howley Volunteer Fire Departments 50/50 ice fishing derby pm Saturday Feb. 22, 2014. $20 per person. Registration ends Feb. 21 at 6 p.m. No registrations on day of the derby. Weigh in 12 noon to 4 p.m. at Howley Community Centre.
