Community Heroes: Ronald McDonald House Newfoundland and Labrador relies heavily on the work of volunteers to fulfil its mission

This month, Ronald McDonald House recognized its volunteers  at a special event in St. John’s titled “Strength in Numbers” Volunteering Gathering. At the conclusion of the event, volunteers were recognized for their years of commitment, which included volunteers that founded Ronald McDonald House Newfoundland and Labrador five years ago: Gerry Beresford, Cathy Bennett, Theresa Rahal, Rod MacDonald, Brad Wicks, Rod Legge, Cathy Dornan, Bill Budgell, Peggy Bartlett, John Henley and the late Dr. Jack Hand. The event also saw presentations of the new Helping “HAND” Awards in honor of the late Dr. Jack Hand. These awards were proudly presented by his wife, Tina Hand who is also among the valued group of house operations volunteers. The 2014 Helping HAND Award category winners were : House Operations — Jackie Furlong; Community Engagement — Annette Higdon of New Harbour;  Leadership — Lorna King;  House Program — Chatters Salon; Outstanding Philanthropist —Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro.
