A decorated air force reservist from this province is among those being featured in a national awareness campaign launched this spring by the Community Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Bill Mahoney of St. John’s, who has worked extensively to help members of Newfoundland and Labrador’s military and police services, is part of the campaign to raise awareness of the community foundations across Canada in a series of print, broadcast, and online messages, each featuring Canadians who embody the concept of “Community Makes You. You Make Your Community.”
“Our campaign salutes Canadians all across the country who are making their homes better places to live. They are at the heart and soul of our communities and we want to celebrate them — and the role they play,” said Ian Bird, president of Community Foundations of Canada, the network for Canada’s community foundation movement.
Mahoney’s commitment to community began in 1968 when he joined the Royal Canadian Air Cadets. Since then, his community involvement has been extensive: serving on the boards of many organizations, including the John Howard Society, the St. John’s Board of Trade, the Rotary Club of St. John’s, serving as one of the founding directors of the Community Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador and as chairman of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Historical Society from 2004 to 2010,
In the spring of 2013, he co-chaired Newfoundland and Labrador’s first Atlantic Maple Leaf Tribute Dinner, which raised more than $800,000 for charitable organizations that support military personnel, veterans, and their families in Newfoundland and Labrador and drew attention to the physical, psychological, and emotional tolls that military service takes on soldiers and their families.
“Bill gives of himself without thought of reward, and we are delighted to see his extensive history of community service recognized in this way,” said Ainsley Dicks, executive director of the Community Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador. “Communities across our province are filled with stories of everyday heroism. This campaign is an opportunity to celebrate those who have made our communities better places to live and to ask ourselves how we can contribute in turn.”
