A special issue of St. John's-based literary journal "Riddle Fence" is being launched Thursday in connection with the Cupids 400 celebrations.
Cupids 400 Inc. - the organizing body for events and building projects in recognition of the 400th anniversary of English settlement in Newfoundland - supplied $15,000 in funding for the edition.
"We are very pleased to be a partner in the publication of this special edition of Riddle Fence and delighted to support the arts in this way. We hope to welcome many artists to Legacy Hall (in the Cupids Legacy Centre) in the years to come," stated chair of Cupids 400 Inc., Roy Dawe, in a news release.
The special edition includes a piece on the history of the Cupids settlement by archaeologist William Gilbert; a look at 'Quodlibets' (believed to be the first book of English verse produced in North America) by a special collections librarian at Memorial University, Patrick Warner; artwork by Grant Boland and Jonathan Green; poems A.F. Moritz (2009 Griffin Poetry Prize winner); reviews of two Newfoundland poetry collections; fiction; and a personal essay by editor and poet Amanda Jernigan.
The launch will be a private function at 7 p.m. at the newly opened Cupids Legacy Centre (Seaforest Drive, Cupids). However, copies of the journal will be available for sale at the Museum Store in the centre, and everywhere Riddle Fence is sold.

You better leave early to arrive on time. The Conception Bay highway from Chapel Cove through Brigus has been in the worst condition that I have ever experienced in the past four weeks. A great welcome to visitors to our province. TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE. YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED. ANOTHER MAKE WORD PROJECT????
