Education: Received a bachelor of commerce degree from Memorial University.
Private career: Worked as chief executive officer of the Goose Bay International Airport, investment adviser and chief executive officer of Nunacor Aboriginal Development Corp.
Political career: First elected to represent the former district of Stephenville in the legislature in 1985 and remained a member of the house until he left politics in 2003. Served as minister of enviroment, labour, forest resources, tourism and recreation in previous Liberal administrations. He became leader of the party in August when Yvonne Jones suddenly stepped down for health reasons, but failed to win a seat in Tuesday's election.
Personal: Was 24 years old when he was first elected to the legislature.
