Saskatchewan Party to move start of school to after Labour Day if re-elected

SASKATOON - Premier Brad Wall's latest campaign promise will likely appeal to those too young to vote Nov. 7.

Wall says if his Saskatchewan Party is re-elected, it will change the start of the school year until after Labour Day for kindergarten to Grade 12 students.

He says starting school sooner messes up the last long weekend of the summer for families who are camping or vacationing.

The premier also says a recent study by Tourism Saskatchewan found that 60 per cent of tourism-related businesses say their business suffers when students start school before Labour Day.

School boards will still have the option to bring teachers back before Labour Day to prepare for classes and to have professional development days.

Students in British Columbia and Manitoba start on the Tuesday after Labour Day each year.
