DEER LAKE — Citing time constraints, former councillor Jim Williams has pulled out of the race for Deer Lake council.

Williams, who works for Shears Building Supplies and owns an ice cream parlour, said he came to the realization he doesn’t have the available time he believes is required to hold a seat on council.

“(I was told) a councillor can spend up to 50 hours per month on the job, that’s two or three hours per day, and that’s mostly in the daytime,” he said. “With so many committee meetings and council meetings I just wouldn’t have the time for it.”

With a full-time job, Williams said he would not be able to leave work for council duties thus and believes that is why many elected officials are retired or self-employed.
