Goulding, Wheaton agree recreation centre biggest issue

PASADENA — Since the council is already acclaimed in Pasadena, mayoral candidates Otto Goulding and Tom Wheaton know what kind of team one of them will lead for the next four years.

Both outgoing councillors, Wheaton and Goulding figure their past records speak for themselves, and each believe they have the experience to lead the Humber Valley town.

Leading up the election, we asked: “What kind of leadership can you provide this council and what's the most pressing issue the town council is facing?

Otto Goulding

“I will provide the leadership I’ve always provided in any organization, like with the Greater Humber Joint Council.

“I see my role as a facilitator of ideas. All councillors have a reason for selecting or deciding to go on council and I have to gather all their ideas and withdraw some consensus from them, and that’s a role I’ve always provided in a leadership position.

“The biggest issue is the recreation centre, which has been a longtime coming for this area. A big concern I’ve heard going door to door is not just the initial cost of the centre, but also the operating costs going forward. As a part of the last council we looked at having new programs that will be of benefit to the town, such as seeking partnerships.”

Tom Wheaton

“Leadership — I have served on council for the last 12 years as a councillor and I feel I have enough experience now to help lead the town in the next four years at least.

“I think the recreation centre is the most pressing issue. The centre is financially overrun, which the town has to finance and I feel with this, the decision shouldn’t be made on the facility until the next council comes in to review the figures and see where we can cut costs.

“I want this building and the Town of Pasadena needs it, but we have to figure out how to build it so that it doesn’t create too much debt for us, and that’s something we all need to work on as a council.

“We shouldn’t do something if we can’t afford it.”
