St. John’s — The final nominations for the fall St. John’s municipal election were listed Tuesday afternoon and one person who had started to campaign early was not named among the 30 people running for the 11 positions.

Simon Lono, who was running in Ward 2, withdrew his name before the close of the nominations, citing a health issue as the reason.

Lono told The Telegram it was a health issue that has not yet been definitively diagnosed and that raised questions about his capacity to effectively run a campaign.

“There is no one more disappointed than me at this turn of events, but I’ll tell you something — you don’t always have all the factors in your control,” he said.

Lono also said the only way he won’t run next time around is if a health issue again holds him back or if city hall becomes a model of perfection.

Kudos to Simon for stepping away. It shows class and respect for the people he would have represented. I hope his health issues are not serious and wish him all the best.
